Aug 17, 2018 – Surf and Turf
Donna, our host, served us breakfast on the balcony at 9-ish, a delicious egg-crepe-fruit thingy that I am hoping Chrystal can teach me how to make. (Who am I kidding … that I’m hoping she can teach Jeff how to make!)
We kicked off the day by going to Hidden Grove Heritage Forest to do some hiking. We had a map that showed tons of trails that looked like we could easily spend 3 or 4 hearty hours walking through. As it turned out, we were a little off on the scale and what looked like a 30 min hike was more like, say, 30 feet. So we ended up covering a LOT of the trails in about 90 minutes.
That left us tons of time to explore the bay on stand-up paddle boards. This was a huge risk for me, as I’m not what you’d call “coordinated”. As an example, a couple of weeks ago I was riding my biking up a hill, at the top of which was a traffic light requiring me to sidle in alongside the curb and gracefully set my foot down to await the green. What I did was lose my footing and gracefully tip right over, smashing my leg hard into the sidewalk. In front of a bunch of cars and a motorbike. (“Are you ok?” “Nothing hurt here except my pride.”) Not surprisingly Jeff and I both fully expected me to topple off the paddle board as well, but not only did I successfully circumnavigate the tiny bay, I managed to stop onto and off of a floating dock.
Dinner was at the Blue Heron, a nice little spot down near Sechelt. Thankfully we had a table for 2 on the patio, as the inside of the restaurant smelled a lot like mouldy carpet. We both had the pistachio Halibut, which was tasty. Jeff took umbrage with their claim that “the only way it could be fresher is if you caught it yourself” given that Atlantic Lobster was one of the menu selections. The best part of the restaurant location was a narrow little pier that seemed to be home to 20 or so gulls, and the worst part was that it was off limits for walking.
Tomorrow: spa day!
Ha! I have a recipe to send to you …I mean Jeff. Sounds like a great trip….
