We drove to Galway today but made a stop along the way in Kilbeggan (pop. 1,288), because it’s the home town of a friend from work. As an unexpected bonus, the Kilbeggan distillery is located in the heart of the town and it’s here that they produce Tyrconnell, one of my favourite Irish Whiskeys! We skipped the distillery tour (we have at least 2 others already planned for this trip and it’s not Mitchell’s number one thing to do), but we did partake of a tasting of 3 varieties: Kilbeggan single grain, Kilbeggan blend and Locke’s. We bought some Locke’s to bring home since we’ve never seen it in Canada. We walked around the main street of the town a bit, and ended up back at the distillery since it’s apparently “the only place in town” where you can get lunch.
In Galway, we headed into the heart of town to discover there were hundreds of other people wandering around. Eventually, we managed to weave our way down to the water to discover that Galway is an extremely pretty city. I could easily come back and spend more time here, whereas I feel like I’ll have exhausted Dublin by the time we leave.
We thought it was busy because of the Galway horse races which start Monday, but our cab driver told us it was because of an arts festival that ends this weekend. Whatever the case, it was extremely crowded, so we ventured off the beaten path for dinner at (of course) a pub.
Back at our fancy hotel, Jeff and I enjoyed a whiskey in the bar while we booked our B&B for tomorrow in a little town called Doolin on the Cliffs of Insanity Moher. Mitchell stayed behind in the room and probably watched TV, you know, because.
